Big parts of the finnish archipelago sea consists of vast areas consisting of thousands of uninhabited islands. For a sea kayaker, it is easy to imagine being alone in the world slowly moving through such areas, finding new pearls around each corner.
Many bigger islands in the archipelago are also inhabited. The archipelago life differs a lot from life on mainland. ... ...

Vänö is an island with a long history. Already on the 14th century it is known that Vänö had a fishing population, with a village situated on the same spot as the village today. Selling of and trade with baltic herring has been an important part of life on Vänö, with fishermen travelling in to Salo with the fish, trading it in for grain and money. During the winters, seal hunting was an important way to get food and money from selling fat and product made out of the skin.

Twenty-five kilometers southwest of Hanko or 17 km south of the Rosala islans, at the entrance of the Gulf of Finland, stands Scandinavias tallest lighthouse Bengtskär. Towering 52 meters above the sea, the lighthouse of Bengtskär is the archipelago`s most imposing and magnificient monument.
